Noom Alternatives: Top 3 Competitors

best Noom alternatives

Wondering if there are any decent alternatives to the Noom diet app? While we’re big fans of Noom around here, it’s not always the right choice for everyone.

If you fall into this category, consider yourself lucky, because there are plenty of great Noom Alternatives that can fit a variety of dietary needs, lifestyles, and budgets.

Here are the alternative diets will be discussing in this report:

  1. myWW (Weight Watchers)
  2. Nutrisystem
  3. Trim Down Club

Each of these diets differ from Noom, and all are great alternatives for a lot of people. WW and Trim Down Club are fairly similar to Noom, but have different pricing points and features that may make them a better choice for you when compared to Noom.

Nutrisystem, on the other hand is totally different than Noom. It’s included here, because a lot of people prefer a done-for-your diet that makes weight loss very easy and straightforward. It’s a meal delivery diet, so if you like the idea of having most your food choices made for you, then you may want to nudge Nutrisystem to the top of your list.

With those things in mind, let’s dig into these diets in more detail. By the end of this report, you’ll hopefully know if you want to try Noom, or one of the other diets on our list.

We’ll get things started with a look at WW (Weight Watchers).

1. myWW (Weight Watchers): Most Similar to Noom

The Weight Watchers app

WW (Weight Watchers ) recently launched a new program called myWW. It’s a customized diet plan, that they say has been proven to make weight loss easier.

How it Works

myWW is guided by many of the same principles that have always made Weight Watchers such a popular diet option. That includes using a points-based system for tracking your food and exercise. Now, though, they’ve taken their level of personalization up a few notches with the release of myWW.

Here’s how you can get started:

  • Complete Your Personal WW Assessment: This helps them better understand your personal preferences and lifestyle better.
  • Get access to a weight loss program that has been designed just for you.
  • Option of attending in-Studio meetings and/or get 24/7 coaching support via your app.
  • Make smarter eating and exercise choices with your daily SmartPoints budget.
  • Use the app, the coaching, and in-person meetings (optional) to reach your diet and health goals.

What Makes it Similar to Noom?

If you’re looking for a diet plan that is the most similar to Noom, then we’d say WW is the top choice. The two diet apps are very similar.

The both:

  • Offer Coaching
  • Connect You with a Community via the App
  • Have a Huge Food Database
  • Teach You Healthy Eating and Exercise Habits
  • Are Largely App-Based
  • Pricing is very similar

What Makes Them Different?

While Noom and Weight Watchers have a lot in common, there are a few things that make them different from each other a well.

These differences include:

  • WW uses points to help you learn healthy eating and exercise habits
  • WW offers in-person meetings and coaching
  • WW has several different plan options to pick from, while Noom offers one main plan
  • WW has been around for decades, Noom is the “New Kid on the Block”
  • WW has been named the number 1 diet for weight loss by U.S. News & World Report for 10 years running

Who Should Join myWW?

In terms of pricing, WW and Noom are pretty much on par with each other. You can bring the price of Noom down substantially if you commit to months at a time. For example, if you opt for month-to-month, its about $59 per month to use their services. If you purchase a 12-month subscription all at once, though, you can bring the monthly price down to about $20 per month.

Here are a few factors, though, that may make WW more appealing to some people when compared to Noom:

  • In-Person Meeting and Coaching: If you like the idea of attending in-person meetings and coaching sessions, then WW is your choice.
  • SmartPoints: WW pretty much invented to points system for tracking food and exercise, and it’s been proven to work great.
  • WW has the longer track-record of success: Noom still works great, though, too.

2. Nutrisystem

nutrisystem food with fresh produce added

While Noom and WW can work great for a lot of people, others prefer a more done-for-your program to get started. Maybe you’re super busy, don’t like meal prepping and planning, or just really dislike going to the grocery store (that’s me ;-)).

Whatever the reason, millions of people turn to Nutrisystem every year (read our review), and a lot of them enjoy great weight loss results using their diet delivery program.

If a meal delivery diet sounds more appealing to you than the app-based diet plans like WW and Noom, then we suggest considering Nutrisystem.

How it Works

When you sign up with Nutrisystem, expect to get a month’s worth of food sent to you every month, as long as you’re a member. Eat the food, stick to the plan, and lose an average of 1 to 2 pounds each week.

To get things started quickly, their new Personal Plans program can help people lose up to 18 pounds during their first month on the diet.

Here’s how the diet plan works, if you decide to join:

  • Eat 6 times per day: Most of your meals and snacks provided by Nutrisystem
  • Menu built around balanced nutrition designed to maximize weight loss
  • New Personal Plans designed to utilize your body’s natural fat-burning mode
  • No guesswork: Just eat the food and follow their plan
  • Mix in moderate exercise
  • Weekly flex meals: Meals you make at home or eat at restaurants
  • Plans for Special Diets including vegetarians and people with type 2 diabetes

What Makes Nutrisystem Similar to Noom?

Not much really. In fact, these two diets are pretty much the complete opposite. With Noom you’ll use their app to help you build a meal plan, and will be on your own to make meals, snacks etc.

Nutrisystem provides you with a 28-day supply of meals and snacks as part of your membership.

What Makes them Different?

We pretty much answered this above, but here goes again: Nutrisystem is a meal delivery diet program, Noom is an app-based diet plan. Nutrisystem provides you with most of your food for the month, Noom doesn’t provide you with any food.

Noom also offers coaching via their app, which something Nutrisystem doesn’t currently offer. Nutrisytem does have weight loss counselors available via phone or email, though, and they are there to offer whatever diet support or answers questions/concerns you may have.

Nutrisystem does offer a free app, called NuMi. It’s also very useful and has a bunch of tools to help your reach your goals, so be sure to use it should you decide to join.

Who Should Join Nutrisystem?

If diet delivery sounds appealing to you, then we suggest considering Nutrisystem. It’s the most-popular meal delivery diet in the world, and they’ve been helping people lose weight for more than 30 years.

If you want a diet that eliminates guessworks, provides most of your food for the month, and is easy to follow, then Nutrisystem may be just what you’ve been looking for.

  • Large food databases
  • Join other members in their “Communities”. Chat, get support, and more.
  • Menu planners and grocery guides
  • On your own for making meals and making smart choices while dining at restaurants (of course, they offer tips for dining out)

What Makes Them Different?

Everything with Noom is run through their app, while Trim Down Club doesn’t currently offer an app. Beyond that, there are couple of other key differences:

  • Coaching: Noom pairs you with a coach when you join. Trim Down Club doesn’t offer 1-to-1 coaching.
  • The App: As mentioned, Noom is an app. You can still use Trim Down Club from a smartphone or tablet, but you’ll access it via your internet browser vs. an app.
  • Price: Trim Down Club is the much cheaper alternative. It costs $1.99 to join. After that it’s only $9.90 per month to keep your membership.

Who Should Consider Trim Down Club?

If you want a simple, yet effective weight loss program, that is also one of the most affordable diets we’ve reviewed, then we recommend considering Trim Down Club.

On top of that, they connect with a community via their live forums, so you can connect with members, build a sense of community, and get support from Trim Down Club’s team of weight loss experts.

Summary

While Noom is one of the fastest growing diet communities in the world, it’s not always the right choice for everyone. That doesn’t mean we don’t recommend it, though. In fact, Noom is one of our top-rated diets: Read our Noom review to see why.

If you don’t feel like Noom is right for you, then we recommend checking out one of the other highly-rated diet plans that we’ve outlined above.

Some are cheaper (Trim Down Club), while others are just a totally different approach to weight loss (Nutrisystem). Either way, find a plan that meets your needs, lifestyle, and fits your budget.

Noom Cost: How Much to Join + Per Month

noom pricing details

How much does Noom cost?

If you’ve tried to find out how much Noom costs and haven’t been able to find information on their website, you are not alone! Noom requires people to give their email address before they will show them the monthly cost of the service.

So, we’re here to save you some time. Here are a few things you should know about the pricing for Noom.

1. Cost to Join

When you sign up for Noom, you begin a free evaluation. Once you’ve completed that evaluation, you’ll be shown an offer to start a 7 – 14 day trial.

This trial isn’t typically billed as free. Rather, they’ll ask you to pay what you think is a fair price.

There are a few pricing options, going as low as one dollar. So, of course, most people will pick the $1 option. When you click on the “see my plan” button Noom will email you with a link to the plan and you’ll be taken to a checkout screen.

There are some exclusive offers that will let you get started without paying a dollar, so you should use an exclusive free trial link if you can, so that you can get 14 days free Noom. When the trial ends, you will be billed.

That said, there are often times when Noom completely waives the trial fee, and you are able to try it for two weeks without any financial commitment.

2. Cost per Month

If you decide that you want to stick with the service after your trial ends you will be asked to subscribe.

The pricing, at the start of 2020, is set at $129 per four month period. You will be billed automatically for that first $129 and then you will be billed again every four months, unless you cancel.

There is a shorter subscription, of $59 per month, which is a good option if you aren’t sure how long you will be using the service, but if you work out the cost of the $129 per month service, that works out at $1.10 a day, or $7.70 per year.

That’s not bad for a diet service.

If you stick to the four month service, it works out at $387 per year. The cost of the monthly sub, over a period of a year, is almost double that.

Make sure that you cancel Noom before the next four-month billing period if you decide that you don’t want to keep it, so that you aren’t hit with a big bill on your card.

3. Cost of Food

Noom is a diet plan but it doesn’t supply food. They do, however, have a huge food list, which makes healthy grocery shopping easier than you might think.

You will be given grocery recommendations, and you will need to budget for the foods that you buy.

If you’re going from eating out at fairly ‘nice’ restaurants to meal prepping with food from the fresh produce aisles in your supermarket you might save money when you start using Noom.

If, on the other hand, you normally eat frozen microwave meals bought in bulk and you then start buying organic vegetables or pre-cut and packaged foods then you might find that you end up spending more.

It really depends on what you buy, and where you buy it from. Fresh fruit and veg, prepared at home, can be a good option for people who are on a budget, assuming that you have the time to cook them.

Summary: Is Noom Worth it?

Noom offers people accountability, structure and motivation. Whether it is worth the investment to you will depend on how much value you place on personal coaching and support.

The coaches are true professionals and they will help you to progress on your weight loss journey, one step at a time.

Noom doesn’t require a huge time investment to ‘use’, but even getting an hour or two per month of one to one support and personal ‘investment’ from a qualified coach can be a huge help for people who are struggling with their weight loss plans.

If you think that you would benefit from having that additional accountability, then Noom is well worth the money.

Noom

Losing weight has never been easy, but it’s simpler than ever thanks to advances in new technology. Diet apps can give people the tools they need to plan and stick to a healthy diet.

With that said, researchers have found that only a small percentage of apps provide accurate weight loss information [1]. It’s essential to use a diet app that’s research-based and proven to be effective.

With over 45 million users, Noom is one of the most popular weight loss apps in the world. It’s also incredibly effective. Noom was designed by behavioral psychologists and works to help users lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.

It’s a high-quality diet program that will help you to lose weight and keep it off.

What is Noom?

Noom is a subscription-based diet app that is designed to help people make healthy lifestyle changes. While restrictive crash diets usually fail, Noom will help you lose weight the right way. With Noom, you can change the way you think about food.

The Noom app provides users with a wide range of tools and resources, including:

  • Exercise, weight, blood sugar, and blood pressure logging
  • Food tracker and database
  • Personalized diet plan
  • Searchable recipes
  • One-on-one coaching
  • Quizzes and articles

The goal of the app is to provide you with more information about the food you’re eating while tricking you into developing healthier habits.

Noom works because it doesn’t overload you with rules. Instead, it teaches you how to pick the right foods for your body.

What helps to differentiate Noom from other diet apps is that it considers the psychology behind food choices. Noom doesn’t tell you what to eat.

Instead, it helps you to understand why you reach for certain types of foods. It also gives you valuable information about the nutritional value of foods so that you can make better decisions about what you eat.

How Noom Works

The Noom diet app is personalized for each individual user. After purchasing a subscription, users will be asked a series of questions. The Noom app will use that information to design a healthy weight loss plan that addresses that user’s needs and weight loss goals.

Noom also pairs users with a health coach.

The health coach will be available to provide support and answer questions during business hours. Having a coach can be a great source of motivation, and it can also be an excellent source of accountability.

Noom also has a massive food database that’s designed to help you choose healthy foods. When you’re logging foods or deciding what to eat, you can either search for foods or scan barcodes for more information. The app will allow you to get instant feedback on foods so that you can make better decisions about what you want to eat.

While Noom always takes a personalized approach, it offers two separate programs so that users can get the type of support they need.

The Healthy Weight program is targeted at users that are interested in weight loss. The Diabetes Management Program is designed to help people with diabetes manage their diet.

Both programs use the same color-coded system, but foods are categorized differently based on the program chosen. The Healthy Weight program is designed to help you choose foods with a lower calorie density.

The Diabetes Management program looks at the carbohydrate density of foods. Although the Healthy Weight program is the more popular of the two, both programs are easy to follow and highly effective.

Noom Food List: Green, Yellow, Red Foods (+ PDF)

Noom’s database contains more than 700,000 foods, and new foods are added to the database all the time.

All of the foods on the list are divided into three categories: green, yellow, and red. Green foods are low in calories but have plenty of nutritional value. These are the foods that should make up the bulk of your diet.

Green Foods

Examples of green foods include:

  • Green beans
  • Spinach
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Oatmeal
  • Brown rice
  • Tofu
  • Polenta
  • Pears
  • Onion
  • Pineapple
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Non-fat yogurt
  • Almond milk
  • Whole-grain cereal

Yellow foods have a higher calorie density than green foods. These foods contain some healthy nutrients, but don’t offer the same benefits that green foods do. These foods can and should be a part of your diet, but should be eaten in more moderate portions.

Yellow Foods

Examples of yellow foods include:

  • Tuna
  • Grilled chicken
  • Salmon
  • Eggs
  • White rice
  • Black beans
  • Deli meat
  • Hummus
  • Turkey breast
  • Greek yogurt
  • Avocado
  • Guacamole
  • Tempeh
  • Diet soda
  • Couscous

Red Foods

Noom doesn’t require you to give up the foods you love. However, you should be cautious around red foods. These foods tend to be high in calories and have little nutritional value. Ideally, these foods should be once-in-a-while treats.

Examples of red foods include:

  • Fried meats
  • Pizza
  • French fries
  • Ranch dressing
  • Hot dogs
  • Hamburgers
  • Peanut butter
  • Whole milk
  • Potato chips
  • Wine
  • Sugar
  • Juice
  • Pancakes
  • Bacon
  • Cookies

Noom Pros & Cons

Pros

Backed by Science

One of the biggest pros of Noom is that it’s evidence-based. The tips and guidance that you’ll receive in the app have been tested and are proven to work.

Learn Healthy Habits for Life

Noom regularly provides users with articles and cited studies so that they can learn more about healthy weight loss.

Noom also makes it easy for users to make smart food choices. The app doesn’t encourage restrictive eating and allows users to pick the foods they want to eat.

Food List is Easy to Understand and Follow

However, the color-coded food list makes it easy to evaluate different foods and decide what you want to eat throughout the day. If you know you want to have a red food, like pizza later, you can make a point of eating green foods throughout the day.

Syncs with Popular Fitness Trackers

If you use a fitness tracker, you’ll be glad to know that Noom syncs with popular trackers like Fitbit and iHealth.

Noom doesn’t have to be the only weight loss tool you use. You can use it alongside other tools for better results.

Cons

What are the downsides to Noom?

Although Noom offers plenty of features, it’s likely you won’t find all these features to be useful. If you’re not much of a reader, you may not be interested in Noom’s behavioral modification articles. If you’re an introvert, you might not want to take advantage of Noom’s group chat feature.

Thankfully, since Noom offers a variety of features, you should still be able to get your money’s worth.

It’s also less than ideal for people that want more guidance and support. Noom puts you in the driver’s seat and lets you choose what you want to eat.

Noom will provide you with more information about food, and it offers a variety of recipes, but it won’t be preparing your meals for you. If you’re hoping to have meals sent to your house, you’ll want to explore other diet plans.

Noom is a subscription-based service, which means you won’t be using this app permanently. When you sign up for Noom, your program will be designed to last for a pre-determined number of weeks.

If you decide you want to continue with Noom, you’ll be billed again when your program ends. If you decide you want to stop using Noom, you can contact your coach to cancel.

This has both positives and negatives. It’s great that you have full control over how long you use Noom. However, when you end your subscription, you’ll lose access to Noom’s food database, tracking tools, and the other resources that Noom provides.

What Are Real Customers Saying?

Noom has an “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot and has received rave reviews from real customers. “I’ve lost over 14 pounds,” says one user. “Noom is just what I needed,” says another.

Users appreciate that the app isn’t focused on restrictive eating and helps people to modify the behaviors that caused them to gain weight.

Many users are impressed by how much Noom teaches them about nutrition and healthy eating. “The information and daily articles are great,” reads one review. Another reviewer says that she is “learning lifelong lessons.”

Although some reviewers say that there is too much reading, everyone seems to agree that Noom is a fantastic teaching tool.

Users also really seem to appreciate the coaching aspect of Noom. Real users have said that having an individual and group coach makes it easier for them to stay on track. “The coaches are super helpful,” raves one reviewer. Users also appreciate how easy it is to customize your Noom experience.

Noom Complaints: Bad Reviews?

Noom has plenty of positive feedback, but not all comments are positive. Some users are dissatisfied with the coaches that are assigned to them.

A number of reviews mention that the coaches sound “robotic” and aren’t a great source of support.

Another common criticism is that Noom is targeted towards users in the United States. Reviews say that many European food products aren’t in the database.

Thankfully, since Noom adds new foods to the database regularly, it’s possible that this complaint will be addressed in the future.

Even though users appreciate the articles and information that Noom provides, some people say that there’s too much of a good thing. Several reviews say that there’s an “information overload” and that they simply don’t have time to read all of the articles that Noom says them.

Noom does allow you to save articles to read later, but even so, some users say that it can be difficult to keep up with the app. More than one review describes the app as “overwhelming.”

Some users say that they were able to cancel Noom by contacting their coach, but other users describe canceling as a “nightmare.”

If you decide to take advantage of Noom’s free trial, or if you know you want to cancel when your plan is finished, it’s best to start the cancellation process sooner rather than later.

Review Summary

Noom is an easy-to-use app that provides users with tons of valuable resources. The coaching system gives users the motivation and accountability they need to push through plateaus.

Best of all, the app is a genuinely effective weight loss tool. According to Scientific Reports, 78% of Noom’s users were able to lose weight and keep it off for nine months or more. (shorturl.at/ilIOS)

While many people want to lose weight, it can be difficult to break bad habits and change behaviors. Noom was created with that in mind. The behavioral psychologists behind the app understand why diets frequently fail.

This is an app built for real, sustainable weight loss. With Noom, you won’t just lose weight. You’ll be able to keep weight off and improve your health.

Noom isn’t perfect, and it’s not the right app for everyone. Some people won’t be able to afford Noom’s subscription fees.

Other people might prefer programs that provide ready-made meals. Still, it’s hard to deny that Noom delivers results. This research-based weight loss app deserves a closer look.
